I don’t know where they come from, but it appears that somewhere are “Powers That Be” who designate certain days of the year as some sort of holiday or “national” day. I realized this when I received an email announcing that it was “National Lasagna Day” sometime last week. Well, as a true OC Active Senior, I decided two things: first, this random selection of sometimes inane holidays required some more research and second, this was absolutely great material for a blog.
By the time I got this list together, I was exhausted and decided that I needed to spend time doing something else. Like get a life.
So here’s what I came up with for just the month of August and my own somewhat skewed take on how it should be celebrated. I swear on all that is holy that I did not make up any of these. They are all specified in various lists/calendars.
Feel free to observe any or all of these life-changing days in any way you wish. Personally speaking, I always think opening a bottle of champagne is a good option.
In the month of August we can celebrate:
National Sisters’ Day – this is okay; I love my sister. She is probably the best person I know.
National Kids’ Day – My mother would say “Every day is kids’ day.”
National Lighthouse Day - I guess lighthouses deserve a day to be shined upon instead of shining upon.
Women’s Equality Day - This must be the day we get to lay on the couch with the remote and channel surf the sports networks.
Friendship Day and National Raspberry Cream Pie Day – Not sure why these two are on the same day. I guess if you are a good friend you’ll give someone a raspberry cream pie?
National Ice Cream Sandwich Day – Love this one!
National Watermelon Day – ditto.
Twins Day Festival – I am not sure what this is about. I wasn’t sure if you celebrated because you are a twin or it had something to do with the Minnesota Baseball team.
National Mustard Day – Hot dog!
Wiggle Your Toes Day – I wiggle my toes every day just to make sure they are still there since I haven’t seen them in years.
Sea Serpent Day – C’mon! Really? Are we supposed to gather around Loch Ness and sing “Happy Birthday?”
Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Night – I don’t know why this deserves a day…and I hesitate to think what the reaction of my neighbors would be if I observed this one.
National Polka Festival – Lawrence Welk must have had something to do with this-a one and a-two.
Lazy Day – hmmmmm. This could rank up there with “Women’s Equality Day” in some people’s eyes.
Presidential Joke Day – no comment on this one because no matter what I said it would not be “PC.”
Middle Child’s Day – I will alert my middle child to this, her special day.
Blame Someone Else Day – Perhaps some may blame the middle child?
National Creamsicle Day – This ranks right up there with the Watermelon and Ice Cream Sandwich days.
National Relaxation Day and National Failures Day – Again, why are these two teamed together? Are you a failure if you can’t relax? or if you do relax you may be a failure?
Bratwurst Festival - This should have been matched with the Mustard Day.
National Thriftshop Day – I always support thrift shops. I don’t need it to be singled out for one day in a month.
Bad Poetry Day – Funny this one should come up. I was looking for something over the weekend and came upon some really bad poetry I wrote.
Potato Day – I would have paired this one with Sour Cream and Chives Day.
National Radio Day – don’t get this one either. Is it to remind people that there are radios which offer music and information? not only iPods and M3 players?
National Spumoni Day – Yum on this one…but I would have thought it would be in October, which I discovered is Italian American Heritage Month when doing my research.
Be An Angel Day – You should be an angel every day.
National Spongecake Day – I would have liked to have seen this one coupled with the Spumoni.
Knife Day – You need to have this in order to enjoy the Raspberry Cream Pie and Spongecake Days.
Kiss-And-Make-Up Day – This should have been in the end of July when Congress was battling over the debt ceiling.
National Cherry Popsicle Day – Ranks right up there with the Creamsicle and Ice Cream Sandwich Days.
Petroleum Day – Not sure I like this falling in the same week as Spongecake and Cherry Popsicle Days.
World Sauntering Day – I was slow in figuring out what this one is about.
More Herbs, Less Salt Day – At first glance I thought we needed to name more little boys “Herb” rather than “Sal.” Then I saw that it was “salT” and realized it was actually to encourage people to flavor food with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme rather than sodium.
National Toasted Marshmallow Day – “C’mon baby, light my fire” for this one!
National Trail Mix Day – I think the food conglomerates had something to do with this one.
Looking into all of this has prompted me to create some of my own special days…and that blog will be posted on ”To Be Continued Day.”
