Farmer’s Market: Saturdays 8 a.m. – Noon (rain or shine) at University Center on the corner of Bridge and Campus (across from UCI).

Great Park Farmer’s Market: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays next to the Farm + Food Lab at the park. Parking and admission are free. Information: 714.573.0374.

Green Saturdays: The OC Green Markets hosts Green Saturdays every second Saturday of the month. The open-air market’s activities include food trucks, kids’ activities, green products and services, holistic and alternative therapies, and nonprofit organizations. Admission is free; parking is $2 per car and can be reimbursed with a vendor purchase. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Irvine Valley College, 5500 Irvine Center Drive. Information:

Open Space Preserve Nature Center: The Open Space Preserve Nature Center, 1 Sunnyhill Drive, has its monthly land steward on the second Saturday of each month for participants 16 and up. Projects will include trail maintenance, invasive plant removal and general conservation. Information: 949.724.6738 or

Honor Memorial: The nation’s first memorial for U.S. military fallen in Afghanistan and Iraq is located in Northwood Community Park, 4531 Bryan Avenue. Open to the public 24 hours a day, year-round with official ceremonies on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and with the unveiling of new names. Information:

Center for Living Peace: The organization provides a place where children, families and adults of all ages can connect to self, others and the world and feel inspired to make a difference. A variety of exercise programs, events and service opportunities are available. Information:

Fire Safety: Orange County Fire Authority has free fire-alerting devices for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing and live in apartments or other multi-family homes. Volunteers from Age Well Senior Services will install the devices. Homes must also have a smoke detector. Information: 949.855.8033.

Great Park Hours: The Great Park hours are 10 a.m. to sunset Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday; and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The orange balloon and carousel, both free, are open Thursday through Sunday. Information and hours:

Conditioning Hikes: Easy to moderate hikes, 4 – 7 miles on hilly trails are provided by Orange County Sierra Singles. The free hikes are from 6:15 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays leaving from Turtle Rock Community Park, 1 Sunnyhill. Information:

Legal Aid: The city has partnered with Legal Aid Society of Orange County to provide free civil legal services to qualified Irvine residents. Services include self-help clinics, workshops, online court forms, an intake hotline, preparation of legal documents and legal representation. Areas include bankruptcy, foreclosure, debt collection, health consumer issues, residential eviction, family law and tax issues. Information: or 800.934.5001.

Meditation: All ages are welcome to some Shambhala meditation to cultivate the mind’s stability, clarity and strength in order to be more awake and compassionate in everyday life. Meditation is 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and 10 a.m. to noon Sundays at the Center for Living Peace, 4139 Campus Drive. Cost is $5-$10. Information: 949.854.5500 or

Flora and Fauna Fitness Hike: Hike through rock formations and native plants in this leisurely 3.2-mile hike. The paved trail provides a workout with a steady, sloping incline to the top of scene Loma Ridge. The hike is at 6 p.m. on Thursdays leaving from the Hicks Haul Road Staging Area at Portola Parkway and Jeffrey Road. Free. Registration required: Information: 714.508.4757.

Keen Center: The Al and Dorothy Keen Center for Senior Resources at Lakeview Senior Center helps link Irvine seniors and their families to resources. Residents can find information on issues such as transportation or Medicare, attend a lecture or join a support group. The center is at 20 Lake Road. Information: 949.724.6926 or

Earth Drumming Workshop: Drumming can boost the immune system, provide social support, brain stimulation, and heighten self awareness. No prior musical experience needed. Open to all ages.
